About the Project

The new 80,000 square foot indoor aquatics facility at Regency is a public-private partnership venture between NOVA Aquatics and Henrico County, Virginia. This facility is only the second to house a 50-meter Olympic size swimming pool in the Richmond area and the first to be located in a building that was previously a Macy’s department store. The project includes one 50-meter pool, two 25-yard pools, locker rooms, swim shop, coach’s office, lobby and upper mezzanine for viewing.

In order to make way for the competition pool, 28 structural bays of second floor framing including 18 columns that also supported the roof were removed while leaving the roof structure intact. Six steel trusses were built in place to span 112 feet over the pool. An intricate shoring, jacking, and sequencing method was used to facilitate the demolition of the second floor and columns after the trusses were built.
